Of course it does behoove one to read the
others first in order to see how the characters have developed
and grown into their roles.

The Rangers Will and Halt join with their friends warrior Horace,
diplomat Alyss and Princess Evanlyn to fight a fierce, unrelenting
foe on behalf of a much beloved Nihan-Ja Emperor.

As with all of the series, it is suitable reading for teens.

The Way of Kings - Briand Sanderson

Brian Sanderson is acclaimed for his own works, but also for
being chosen to, ,and completing, the late Robert Jordan's
"Wheel of Time" series.

The Stormlight Archive, by Brian Anderson, with book one,
"The Way of Kings," begins with intriguing plot lines that
intertwine until characters in each meet. Thus then, does the
story build to its central theme.

A force more malevolent than the petty wars between
races faces those who occupy the world of Roshar.

Those destined to fight them gather one by one amid the
chaos of war, the surreptitiousness of betrayal, poison,
assassination and various nefarious plots.

THE BLACK PRISM
By Brent Weeks

The Black Prism is full of characters who embody, indeed,
emit light as easily as others breathe. The descriptions of
how the colors of light, the differences and how it is achieved
for the purposes of personal use or weaponry are throughout
the tale. The descriptions left me skipping those parts and
going on ahead to the main story line.

The tale was interesting, but of the two books I found the first,
The Way of Kings, more enjoyable.

Author Nora Roberts as J.D. Robb

Among the authors that write excellent cop stories
J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts) is one of my favorites.

Robb/Roberts features characters cops Delia Peabody,
Feeny, McNab, Morris, mansion manager Summerset,
and of course, Lt. Eve Dallas, Homicide, and her husband,
multi-billionare Roarke.

The setting is New York City in 2050/2060 time
frame, and Robb/Roberts' idea of what that grand
city (and our nation) would be like at that time after
years of urban wars and ecological upset is interesting.

Set mostly in New York, Robb/Roberts uses settings
such as Ireland and off planet resorts where crime
doesn't take avacation.

Cop stories are often gritty, portraying the worst of
human nature. Robb/Roberts peppers her tales with
murder, mayhem, humor, passion and compassion
intertwined with the personal strengths, fears and
foibles of her characters.

As long as she keeps writing the Lt. Unbeknownst
to herself and others, Tessia is a "natural." A magician of
natural ability. Upon the discovery of her hidden talents,
Tessia's life changes beyond her belief. Fighting against
prejudice and ignorance Tessia learns to control her
magical gift and how to use it in healing and helping
others.

Jayan is close to reaching his goal of full fledged magician
with Lord Dakon as his mentor and teacher. At first his
disdain for Tessia is due to having to share his teacher,
although later he will come to understand Tessia's
drive and reasoning towards her goal of melding
magic and healing.

Takado of the Sachakan people is a vicious killer. Used to the freedom of
women under the Elyne's, Vora seeks her father's
approval and wishes to help in his trade. Yet all
she finds is disappointment, an arranged marriage
and a different type of slavery.... until she is able
to use her magic to further not only her cause, but
that of other downtrodden women.

Their lives intersect in a time of war and the
outcome changes them forever.

Paula Froelich - Mercury in Retrograde

Browsing the library shelves my eye was
caught by the title "Mercury in Retrograde."
Curious, I just had to take a peek and see
what this book was about.

It's a tale of three young women who
suddenly find themselves in different
circumstances than usual. My enjoyment in his
novels often comes from the peripheral characters he writes about.
In addition, Wilbur Smith's love of Africa, (the setting for most all of
his novels), his descriptions of the people, animals and landscapes are
vivid and draw the read in.

In Assegai, the lines between good and evil are clearly delineated
among it's principal characters and one can't help but root for the
"good guys."

Daniel Silva - The Defector

Silva's novels though seeming to be slow paced are not. The pace quickens
with the action and the stories are riveting. With an undercurrent of love
and friendship flowing through the tales of spies, hateful murder, scores to
settle in vengeance, "The Defector" doesn't have any trouble keeping the
reader's attention throughout it's pages.

AGINCOURT by Bernard Cornwell

Agincourt - I saw Bernard Cornwell's latest novel at the library and
snapped it up because I enjoy his attention to detail, both in the
historical sense and in the dress and mores of the times he writes
of.

Spanning the English channel, the story of NIcholas Hook takes place
both in England and in France and readers are provided with a glimpse
into what war was really like at Soissons and at Agincourt in 1415.

Following both the commoner Nicholas Hook, and the people and
events around him, and Henry V, King of England who intends to
claim the French crown, the story is told primarily from the point
of view of Nicholas.

A young man who could only wish for greater things in life, but
despairs of ridding himself of a cursed existence finds himself
achieving far more than he ever thought possible. I was able to view a movie
of the book many years ago and although it wasn't memorable
it was better than trying to read the book.

The stack of books I'd had to read was just as lacklustre as the
first so they aren't listed here.

I did have the pleasure of re-reading several of Ann Rule's books,
all of them a study of the worst motives in human nature.

Bitter Harvest, (Debora Green Farrar's murder of children
Timothy and Kelly, their dog(s), and the attempted murder of
daughter Kate Farrar and their father, Dr. Michael Farrar.

Too late to say Goodbye (Dorothy "Dolly Hearn &
Jennifer Corbin, both shot to death, murdered by Barton Corbin)

Small Sacrifices
(Diane Downs' murder of daughter Cheryl and the shooting of
her other children, Christie (Downs) Hugi and Daniel (Downs)
Hugi.

I'm planning on re-reading several other books of Ann's in
future and hope to get my hands on her newest release.

Ranger's Apprentice Book 5 - The Sorcerer of the North by John Flanagan

Grim tidings from the Norgate in the north send the
Ranger Will on a quest to sort out fact from fiction. Lawhead

Continuing the saga of Rhi Bran y Hud (the tale of Robin
Hood set in ancient Wales), Lawhead presents us with
"Scarlet" the second book of the King Raven trilogy.

Will Scatlocke chronicles his life as it turns from work
under a fair and honest man to life as a traveler and
eventually to the deep forest and into the presence of
King Raven. His tale is like that of the others who seek
shelter from unjust laws and Norman persecution, of
poverty and of imprisonment.

Scarlet opens the door to the perfidy of Kings and the
corruption and political factions that existed within
religious orders.

In 2009, the final book of the King Raven trilogy will
be released and is titled "Tuck."

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://bogstersbooks.blogspot.com/2008/06/scarlet-by-stephen-r-lawhead.html' title='Scarlet by Stephen R. The story is set during the reigns of Nero
and Domitian, both in the Germanic region and in Rome.

Auriane, a young Chatti girl, daughter of a Germanic tribal
chieftan, becomes a warrior for her clan and leads them to
victories against their enemies. Living under a prophesy
told at her birth she struggles to change a doom foretold
and finds that prophesies have a way of coming true.
Trained to fight Roman style by a captive and
drawing upon her primal beliefs, Auriane becomes
expert with a sword and shuns old ways of fighting
and leads her people with new tactics.

A young Roman boy from the slums is rescued and
raised to his rightful status. Marcus is driven by his
search for truth and learning. Incurring the wrath of
his father and his enemies, Marcus strives to intercede
on the behalf of those unjustly accused, becoming the
bane of his friend, Domitian.

Their destinies collide after Auriane, now a holy
woman of her tribe, is defeated by the Romans
in battle, taken prisoner and trained to be a
Gladiator.

With an epic fight for survival, assassination of
an Emperor, the author provides a story
that is not only believeable, but enjoyable.

"Poison Study" a Novel by Maria V. As always, Anne shows compassion for the victims,
the families, and those who are forever affected by the deaths, even
of those on the periphery of the case.

Barton Corbin's jealous attitude, his rage and stalking of women
who decided against further committment with him highlights the fact
that there was something wrong with his inner make up long before
he committed the murders. j

Anne digs into the background of those she writes about and this book
is no exception. One book that was recommended
by others on a crime blog was "Under The Banner of
Heaven" by Jon Krakauer.

This book outlines the history of the Mormon church
and its leaders; it also chronicles the split within
the congregation in more recent history. The FLDS and
its "prophets" are touchedupon as well. Krakauer also
focuses attention upon a brutal murder conducted by
fundamentalist zealots, those who knew of the plot
and failed to warn the victims, including close
relatives.

I've not yet read or viewed Banking on Heaven
by Laurie Allen which documents escapees from the
FLDS sect but I'm hoping to do so. More information
about the film can be found at the link.

More about the FLDS:
Colorado City Polygamists: An Inside Look for the
Outsider By Benjamin G. Another City Not My Own
by Dominick Dunne was so interesting that once I
sat down to read it, I couldn't put it down until the
ending page.

If you thought you knew everything there
was to know about the hoopla and background
surrounding the murders of Ron Goldman,
Nicole Simpson and the trial of Orenthal Simpson,
you just might not.

Some of the tidbits Dunne presents aren't the
kind that were presented on nightly television,
and that those who don't frequent the madcap
California lifestyle or tabloids wouldn't have had
any inkling of.

Many around the world, entranced, watched hours
of the television court room proceedings, tv
media pundits expounding upon the case as well as
reading print articles and listening to radio shows
about the case. Obsession set in. People couldn't
get enough information.

Dominick Dunne was there. He also became
obsessed with this case. Through his
his connections throughout the many
varied layers of Hollywood/Los Angeles society,
a whole different level of overlapping layers
to this case are exposed in this book.

Dominick Dunne has always made it
clear publicly or in media, that he has
no sympathy for those who murder
or those who cover it up.

Having had his own personal experience
with the murder of his actress daughter,
and the injustice of her killer walking free
with an inappropriately short sentence
and a totally incompetent media hungry
judge in that case, Dunne is quite aware
of the nuances that occur in and around
families and courtooms in murder cases.

Since this book is as proclaimed on the front
cover, "A Novel in the form of a Memoir" I
had wondered why Dominick Dunne had
utilized a character, Gus Bailey in the role
of himself, especially since the names of
those he wrote about are all truly named
and the events from his life, many he'd written
about, are touched upon.

However, this morning, after having as they
say "slept on it." I now realize why. At least
I think I have, it's my impression anyway.

As himself writing, using the first person "I,"
he could not have worked in the ending that he
used.

With "Gus Bailey" as his principal character, based
upon himself, he could work into the overall
story, a thread, in the form of a person, who
was introduced to, and present through some of
Dominick Dunne's socializing in Los Angeles and
Hollywood during the long trial.

That person subsequently went on to
do serial murders, in particular on another
well known society personality.

Dominick Dunne

I've just finished reading Dominick Dunne's book
"The Mansions of Limbo." The book is a collection
of articles Dunne authored for Vanity Fair Magazine.

In these articles, Dominick chronicles the ups and tawdry
downs of high/low society, the famous and infamous.
Embedded among stories of the misbehaving hijinks of
the want to be, the rich, the extremely rich, Dominick
Dunne sheds a new light upon the people involved
directly or peripherally within society.

Dominick Dunne was present at the sale of the late
Duchess of Windsor's jewels and regales the reader
with the hoopla preceding the sale, the bidding, the
bidders, along with descriptions of the jewelry and the
people who surrounded the late Duke and Duchess
of Windsor during their lives.

My two favorite articles in this collection are those
that were a departure from the misbehaving lore.
They are an interview with Jane Wyman, the
actress, and an encounter with Jordan's King Hussein
and Queen Noor, as well as subsequent interviews with
her majesty.

With those interviews, Dunne shows that his interest
is genuine, his heart/ear are sympathetic, and his
stories worth reading.

"Another City, Not My Own" A Novel in the form of
a Memoir also by Dominick Dunne is my current reading
material.

Dominick Dunne creates a character who moves through
Los Angeles and the trial of O.J. Simpson.

From the book inside cover "Using real names
and places Dunne interweaves the story of the trial
with the personal trials Gus endures as he faces his
own mortality." "This book illuminates the meaning
of guilt and innocence in America today."

Season Greetings!

HOLIDAY WISHES

For no matter the
reasons the medical profession may proffer for certain
murderous crimes, there always remains the fact that
some persons do not have a conscience when it comes to
other people being in the way of what they want.

Many of us on the net who follow true crime cases have
followed many of the cases Ludwig & Birkbeck have
included in this book.

As such, many of us would not have grouped specific
killers within some of the categories that in this book
they have been placed. Some might argue that
there also should be a category for "just plain mean."

Among the Chapters & Cases in the book:
Betrayal/Abandonment Killer
Clara Harris
Betty Broderick

Control Killer
David Breame
Richard Sharpe
Robert Bierenbaum

Sociopathic Killer
Christian Longo
Mark Hacking

Black Widow/Profit Killer
Julia Lynn Turner
Kimberly Hricko

Narcissistic Killer
Rabbi Fred Neulander
Pamela Smart

Temper Tantrum Killer
Scott Peterson
Brian Trimble

Transference Killer
Michael Peterson
Celeste Beard

Revenge Killer
Susan Wright
Nancy Seaman

Pregnancy Killer
Rae Carruth
Charles Stewart

Caregiver Killer
Rosewell Gilbert

Ken Follett

Ken Follett is a writer that's easy to read. In World Without End his latest
creation, Follett breathes life into 1300s England, France and Vienna,
bringing it to us with all it's politics, conflicts and varying moralities.

Although billed as a sequel to the Pillars of the Earth (1989), World
Without End stands on it's own merits. Follett's attention to details,
even of the smallest kind, breathes life into each character from peasant,
knight, lady or bishop.

The main setting of both books is the town, cathedral and priory of
Kingsbridge England with some events occurring in local villages,
France during war time, and Vienna during the plague.

The story centers upon a man torn between the love of his life and his love
of architecture, a woman torn between the man and her desire to step out
of the expected mold for women to improve the science of medicine without
being cast as a witch, and a woman simply trying to stay alive and protect
those she loves.

All are emeshed within a swirling kaleidoscope of political intrigue, the fears
and reality of the plague, human kindness, ignorance and brutality.

Bruce Feiler - Walking the Bible

Walking the Bible, A Journey By Land Through The Five Books of Moses written by Bruce Feiler.

I've just begun reading this book and find it fascinating. Having walked the streets of Ephesus and other Biblical sites while living in Turkiye, Feiler's travels through the Middle East are of particular interest to me. Although I was unable to visit Mount Ararat and other locations mentioned in the book I've read extensively about many of them. His descriptions of the sights, sounds and details of the cities and landscapes along the way are of how they exist today. Yet, having traveled in Turkiye, I can personally attest that once you are there, it's easy to wonder and try to evoke in your own mind how it would looked or have been long ago, long before any modern age.

Bruce Feiler, accompanied by renowned Archaeologist Avner Goren, traveled through war zones, multiple countries and continents while retracing Biblical locations. Feiler was attempting to answer his personal query "Is the Bible just an abstraction or is it a living, breathing entity?"

Halloween Greetings

Pats wishes you all a safe and Happy Halloween!

New entries at CMM

Joseph Kanon

Joseph Kanon, author of both Los Alamos and Prodigal Spy has written a historical murder novel titled "The Good German."

In the days of 1945 Berlin, amidst the rubble, the deprivation on one side and excess on the other, a Press Correspondent Jake Geismar is searching for his pre-war love. I've read "The Two Mrs. Grenvilles,
A Season in Purgatory, An Inconvenient Woman"
and I enjoy his writing style.

Justice
Crimes, Trials and Punishments, which
is a compilation of nine trials which
Dominick Dunne has attended or written about.

The first chapter in the book is about Dominique
Dunne, Dominick's beloved daughter, and the
trial of her killer John Sweeney. He documents
the travesty of the trial, the mockery of
justice that occurred.

Among the trials in the book are those of
Claus Von Bulow, the Menendez brothers,Lyle
and Erik, Marvin Pancoast (murderer of Vickie
Morgan,former mistress of Alfred Bloomingdale)
and of course, Dunne's experiences during the trial
of Orenthal James Simpson for the murders of Ron
Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson.

Dunne provides a behind the scenes
look at commentary both by strangers and
those connected to, or on the periphery of
the trials. Dominick's wry and forthright
style and unapologetic attitude towards
those who kill make this book (and others)
a fascinating read.

The Secret Houses - John Gardner

"The Secret Houses" is billed as the sequel to "The Secret
Generations" by John Gardner.

It's a continuing tale of two families, American and British,
both within the secret world of intelligence gathering
during World War II and the beginning of the cold war
with Russia.

I've enjoyed John Gardner's previous books, among
them six James Bond thrillers, Gardner continuing Ian
Fleming's tales of the superspy.

"The Secret Houses" has kept me interested.
The entire plot is very plausible and could have come
from events right out of history within the intelligence
community during/after WWII.

Update: I've finished reading "The Secret Houses" and
Gardner kept me guessing until the end. I like an author
who can do that. It can be fun from time to time to
guess who the hidden protagonist is, but not every time.

The plot: Members of both families, from either side
of the pond (Atlantic) are embroiled in the final
intelligence events and days of WWII and
afterwards. Two women of the extended family
had agreed to stay behind in France at the beginning
of the war to help with the resistance. The resistance
group Tarot which the women were a part of, was rolled
up by the Germans in a violent manner. No one knows
the fate of the two women.

The families, especially those within the intelligence
units of both countries, are desperately seeking
answers to their fates.

The action swings from Berlin, France, England and
the United States as the main characters confront
the budding cold war and those Russian or French
communists who become integral to the search
for the two female family members.

Once the two are found, the plot has a distinct
twist in the tale.

The Hitchhiker's Trilogy

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is included in the
Hitchhiker's Trilogy by Douglas Adams. If there's
ever a book that I would consider wacky, this is it.

Although the overall plot could be considered interesting
if presented better, there are pages I've definitely
skipped through! Normally if a book had more
pages that I've skipped than read, I'd put it down
and turn it's pages nevermore. However, I've
decided to see how this one ends. Perhaps I'll
regret that decision, perhaps not.

Update: I definitely regret finishing the book.
It's not one I'd recommend to even the most
die hard fan of Science Fiction or Fantasy genres.

Why is it that in some books, as you are following a
plot line, you are interrupted with a mass
of extraneous bullshit stuck in between the
actions of the characters?

That's what occurred in this book. Repeatedly.

The plot: Take one Englishman down on his luck,
who's shanghaied by a friendly alien (who happens
to write for the agency Hitchhiker's Guide to the
Galaxy) just as the world really does "end"
courtesy of a alien villain who's clearing the way for
a galatic super highway. Bye bye Earth!

Said Alien and Englishmen then gallivant
via different means throughout space
meandering among galaxies back and forth
through time encountering various
meaningful and non-meaningful
characters, only to end up back on earth
just prior to the earth goes kaboom
saving it in the nick ... er, space of time.

The plot was almost an afterthought to
the explanations of various worlds,
word usage, events in space that
had no valid connection with the
present plot.

Thus, my regret for finishing the book!

During my long hiatus away from the blog, I've engaged
in a personal book reading marathon. Practically every
day a new book was on the table or being brought to it.
(My husband also has the habit of beginning to read a book
that I'm not finished with!!! Grrr) So sometimes we're
competing to see who finishes it first.

Although the science fiction or fantasy genres never really
interested me through out my teenage years I've come to
enjoy certain authors and their books immensely. If asked
what my overall favorite genre would be, I'd now be hard
pressed to answer. For as long as I can remember I've
always liked Mysteries more than any genre available.
Romance stories.. eh. Give me action/adventure and a
bit of the romance mixed in, and that's okay. Harlequin
Romances were books my aunt had, and I read out of
SHEER BOREDOM. But hey, other people really enjoy
them.

I think the foray into Sci-Fi/Fantasy genres started
when our teen daughter had to read the Lord of the
Rings series for a school project in high school. We'd
bought the paperback versions for her, yet I'd
never read them.

While re-arranging our books some years ago, I picked
them up and peeked. Having enjoyed the books, when
the movie came out, I was ecstatic. The magic of the
characters coming to life off of the pages of the books
by Tolkien is wonderful. It only adds to our enjoyment
of the series and now our collection now includes the
entire dvd set of the Lord of the Rings, including the
musical score.

Once I'd read LOTR, the dog eared copy of Dune
which had been lying on the bookshelf unread by
me for decades caught my eye and I was hooked.
I became a Dune fan after only the first book
in the series. Over time I've been collecting each
book of the Dune series, as well as LOTR.

While gorging myself on books recently, I happened
upon some books at the library that were very old,
very small and very worn. They're worn because they
are well read. So while scarfing every possible
Sci-Fi book that sounded half way decent to read
I scooped up several of Robert Adams books from
the Horse Clan series. I had to wait for several others
but I've finally gotten to read those, and I've added
his books to the list I have of authors/books I want to
collect for our personal home library.

The Horse Clans series takes place within the U.S.
but in a time and as unlike anything we currently
know. It's our continent, but in the distant future,
after a cataclysmic event. People have slowly
banded together into clans, tribes or other groups,
some nomadic, others ensconced into what passes for
cities built upon ruins of known cities today. Fuedal
style Lords are in charge of large areas or of peoples.

DUNE: The Sandworms of Dune. Yes! It's out and
I've read it. The story begun long ago with the novel
Dune has come full circle and what a finish it is! Yes.
It's a teaser, and I'm not going to tell you anymore at
this point. I don't want to spoil it for all of the Dune fans
who haven't gotten to read it yet.

UPDATE: If you don't want a SPOILER, stop reading!
Sandworms of Dune brings the ending full circle
back to the beginning, in a manner of speaking.

The "final" Kwisatch Haderach turns out to be the
one person you might not have had an inkling would
turn out to be!

Characters you thought were dead and gone are
again alive and their place in the universe has
changed.

That's all the spoilers I'm going to post! Enjoy!

Crime Genre

I've been reading books that were written about crime cases in the news. They were:

Inside the Mind of Scott Peterson by Keith Ablow, M.D.
Ablow's assessment of why Scott Peterson murdered his wife and child stems from psychological events that began in his family, even before he was born. Ablow stated that he made his assessments from utilizing information gained from sources such as: the FBI, hired private investigators and researchers, Gloria Allred, Catherine Crier, Amber Frey, Anne Bird, Scott's ex-girlfriends, LE, the Latham, Peterson and Rocha families and many others.

There were a few bits of information from family members that were new to me which I'd not read in the other books about the case, nor heard/read in other media.

She Wanted It All by Kathryn Casey
On the cover of this book Anne Rule states that Kathryn Casey is one of the best true crime writers today. This is a "do not miss book."

If you followed the case on CourtTv about Celeste Beard, who arranged for her female lover to shoot her husband Steve Beard, you will find this book interesting. Celeste Beard wanted to inherit his millions. Her two daughters testified against her in the trial. This book had more information and background than I had seen on the trial coverage by CTV.

Deadly Seduction by Wensely Clarkson
A prominent attorney, James Grund, from Indiana was murdered by his second wife, Susan Sanders. Susan's checkered past hid a heinous crime prior to her marriage to Grund. She plotted to inherit his money and property, stole her step-son's gun and then tried to implicate him in the murder of his own father.

Quill Award Winner Christopher Paolini

The Quill Awards presented by Random House was held in the Natural History Museum in New York City. I never realized getting dressed could take so long! My suspenders did their best to strangle me, and as for my cufflinks, we are no long on speaking terms.

To my surprise, when the presenters for the young adult award announced the winner, I heard them say my name. My heart was pounding so hard as I walked up to the stage, I thought that I might keel over in front of six hundred people. I said then, and I say now, that I am incredibly grateful and honored to know that you, my readers, voted for me. Lawhead has written a number of novels that have won him critical acclaim internationally as an author of mythic and imaginative fiction and history.

I've previously read the Pendragon Cycle books, Taliesin, Merlin, Arthur, Pendragon, and Grail. I found them enjoyable. He's written several other trilogies as well other novels and children's books.

However, I very much enjoyed this latest offering of "Hood." It is the first book of the "King Raven" series. His second, Scarlet is being worked on at present.

I've been in the vicinity of Nottingham Forest, and it is indeed a very small portion of what it once was, spreading across the land in a sea of green. The traditional stories about Robin Hood are always set in Nottingham Forest, in England.

Lawhead's research shows that the stories of Hood stem from a Welsh figure, and therefore his tale is set not in Nottingham, but in Wales.

I found it thoroughly enjoyable. I'll be keeping an eye out for Scarlet's debut.

Stephen Lawhead

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://bogstersbooks.blogspot.com/2006/10/stephen-r-lawhead.html' title='Stephen R. Literature has a new adventurous hero. Ted Bell's character Alexander Hawke burst onto the scene in "Assassin."

The Vice Chairman and Worldwide Creative Director of Young & Rubicam, (one of the largest advertising agencies in the world) Theodore "Ted" Bell has entered the lists of authors as an author with prestigious credentials.

In addition to writing screenplays for Hollywood, Ted Bell has won a number of awards. Among them, "every top creative prize the industry bestows, Clios, One Show Gold Awards, a number of Bronze, Silver and Gold lions at the prestigious Cannes Festival."

His first book was "Nick of Time," which is an adventurous tale likened to those by Robert Louis Stevenson, who wrote Kidnapped, Treasure Island, both classic tales beloved by children and adults. Nick of Time chronicles Nick and his sister Kate's adventures at the end of which they find themselves heros.

Assassin was his second book and Alex Hawke was introduced along with a rich cast of characters, each of whom would be worthy of books following their own adventures.

Following Assassin was Pirate. The scenario within the story was right off the headlines and intertwined with today's issues and woven into action packed adventure for Alex Hawke and his team.

SPY is his latest novel. Bell's imaginative writing in this book touches upon incidents that happen along the US border with Mexico, drawing the threads of what happens there and twining them around the open and clandestine warfare with evil deep in the Amazon jungles.

Ted Bell Books
Ted Bell Books ~ Welcome

A trek into fantasy

Patricia A. McKillip:

Patricia A. McKillip's book "Song for the Basilisk" is a story that starts with a child rescued from the ashes of his family's deaths and that of their home. It's a story of music, treachery, and an ending that's unexpected.

Patricia McKillip has written many children's books and is a World Fantasy Award- winning author for a number of highly-acclaimed fantasy novels, including the Riddlemaster Trilogy.

Fantastic Fiction ~ Patricia McKillip
Books n Bytes ~ Patricia McKillip
Patricia McKillip

Fred Saberhagen:

Fred Saberhagen's book "Merlin's Bones" drew me in. At first, the flipping back and forth between past and future had me wondering just where the story was leading. As I reached the end I could see relevancy of the tactic. The ending twist brings the reader full circle.

The struggle between Morgan le Fey, Mordred and the Fisher King in their goal of recovering Merlin's bones and thus his power, is chronicled within the story.

Saberhagen's work of Fantasy and Science Fiction has caught the imagination of
readers for a number of decades and still reels them in.

Berserker

John Marco

Author News:
Scott Oden's Men of Bronze and now Memnon, both set within the ancient world, were very enjoyable. If you like reading historical dramas these two books might be to your taste. Scott Oden is currently working on a third book.

Scott Oden

Profiling John Marco:
John Marco's The Eyes of God, the Devil's Armor and the Sword of Angels trilogy are a fascinating treasury of characters, events, magic, political intrigue and war.

If you enjoy fantasy and magical stories that bring you into a world an author has created, that is at once familiar and yet strange, you might enjoy this trilogy. It's a tale of heros and heroines who are ordinary people and some who are not so
ordinary.

I've just learned that Marco has a previous trilogy Tyrants and Kings, which I have intend to read as soon as I can. Another John Marco book I've heard mention of is a stand alone book, The Black Mirror.

John Marco is interested in psychology, in fact has studied in the field. It's clear from an interview he's done previously that what he has learned has made it's way into the plotlines of his books. All of which, has made reading his books a pleasure.

John Marco
Fantasy Node

Update: October 2006, I purchased the Tyrants and Kings trilogy and enjoyed them as much as I did his other books.

John Flanagan: The Burning Bridge, Sequel to Ranger's Apprentice

Since my last entry, I've read several more biographies, mysteries, fantasy and other factual books. Among them a biography on Gold Meier, a series of books by Jack Higgins and the sequel to a book previously profiled.

John Flanagan:
John Flanagan's first book, Ranger's apprentice is followed by it's sequel "The Burning Bridge." It too was enjoyable and the readers are left with a cliffhanger so we'll read the next one to find out what happens.

The lead character Will, and his friend Horace meet up with a young lady whom they intend to escort back to safety, in the midst of a very terrible war.

Among their escapades, Horace, a novice battle soldier, manages to kill the man synonymous with evil, who has waged war against the kingdom for decades.

The young lady isn't who she says she is, and helps Will to burn an important bridge, over which the enemy is coming to terrorize the land. She and Will are kidnapped by mercenaries fighting for the dark and evil enemy and are taken aboard a ship bound for their land.

Will's mentor arrives just in time to see them taken on board and the ship to sail. He bellows to Will to "stay alive." He promises them that no matter how long it takes, he'll find them. Yet they were very real.

Although any book written by a former member of any of the security agencies is heavily vetted by the agency and their legal eagles, this book remains a fascinating look behind the public veil.

Mendez provides a glimpse into what happens on location in the field for agents and the back office machinations of the head honchos over a 25 year career in the Agency.

With all kudos to the Canadian Government who actively helped, participated and co-operated in Tehran back in 1980 to help American hostages, the true story about who helped 6 Americans escape the turmoil is revealed.

A very fascinating read, told in a style that's neither condescending, nor braggart, this book definitely held my attention.

Update: October 2006, Spy Dust: Two Masters of Disguise Reveal the Tools and Operations That Helped Win the Cold War was co-written with his wife Jonna Mendez, also involved in the intelligence field. Both are consultants for the CBS television series The Agency, and are board members of the International Spy Museum, in Washington, DC."

http://www.themasterofdisguise.com
http://cicentre.com/intelligencespeakers/ISB_L-Z/SP_MENDEZ_Tony.htm

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://bogstersbooks.blogspot.com/2006/05/antonio-j-mendez-master-of-disguise.html' title='Antonio J. I'm currently reading Robert Mitchum "Baby, I don't Care" by Lee Server.

Last week I read Dino "Living High in the Dirty Business of Dreams" by Nick Tosches, and Mo'Nique, Notes of a BIG GIRL in a Small-Minded World, Skinny Women are
Evil by Mo"nique and Sherri A. McGee.

I've watched Mo'Nique's performance on television when she was hosting Live at the Apollo and she made me laugh then as she did with things she said in her book.

But the most intriguing Biography I read this week has been The Master of Disguse by Antonio J. Mendez, which I will profile in my next entry.

Trevanian

Last week I read three of Trevanian's novels. The Eiger Sanction, Loo Sanction and Shibumi.

The Clint Eastwood movie Eiger Sanction was based on Trevanian's book. Personally, my
impression is that the movie is better than the book, but without the book, there would have been no movie.

Currently there is a movie in the works based on Shibumi and plans are under way for one based on the Loo Sanction.

I wasn't impressed by the Loo Sanction.

As for Shibumi, although there were interesting bits about caving which held my interest, the overall read was not stellar.

In the tradition of the Eiger Sanction, I hope the movies for both Shibumi and Loo
are more enjoyable.

http://www.trevanian.com/

Bernard Cornwell

Ursula LeGuin:
I was able to obtain the other books in the EarthSea series by Ursula LeGuin. The Tombs of Atuan (which the movie was based on) and Tehanu. I've enjoyed reading the books and comparing them to the movie.

http://www.ursulakleguin.com/

Profiling Bernard Cornwell:
At present I'm reading Excalibur written by Bernard Cornwell. Although British, Bernard Cornwell lives in Cape Cod, USA. He's written numerous books which were International bestsellers, in addition to his Sharpe series.

Apparently Excalibur is the final volume of "The Warlord Chronicles." "The Winter King and Enemy of God" are the other two books in this series.

Bernard Cornwell provides one with a very different tale of King Arthur, his life, the times, and those around him. It's a graphic rendition of the way life was
during the times. It's well written and I shall look for the other two in the series.

http://www.bernardcornwell.net/

Frances Mayes- Under the Tuscan Sun

Frances Mayes:
I enjoy Frances Mayes' writing. The book's setting and the ambiance are appealling.
Her books are like reading a good friend's journal.

Frances Mayes is a former Professor of Creative Writing, Chair of the the Department of Creative Writing, as well as Director of the Poetry Center at San Francisco State University.

Her book Under the Tuscan Sun is in my collection as is Bella Tuscany. Both books became International Best Sellers and have been translated into 14 languages.
Under the Tuscan Sun also became a movie. The movie, a romantic comedy, is also in my collection.

Under the Tuscan Sun tells of her impromptu decision to purchase an aging Italian villa and restore it. The recipes interspersed between stories of trial and error in restoration, in another language, another country, and with a spirt and heart willing to take a chance is a most enjoyable read.

Frances and her husband, Edward Mayes, are both poets. Together they have published "In Tuscany" which is filled with photos and descriptions of bella Italy.

Frances Mayes has several books out which I intend to read. Some of her latest include "A Tuscan Home," (A photography book about cooking and decorating,) and "A Home in the World," (a book that explores what it takes for foreigners to feel at
at home in different countries.)

Ursula LeGuin - Phil Rickman

I've read several books these last weeks and I have another stack to happily browse
through.

Profiling Ursula LeGuin:
EARTHSEA

Although referred to as a Trilogy, the Earthsea series of books are a quartet.

The movie Earthsea, was picked up by the Sci-Fi channel and made into a series. It is an enjoyable fantasy movie for adults and children alike. I was intrigued by the story after I'd read that the author, Ursula LeGuin had written other books that make up the Earth Sea series.

I went in search of Ursula LeGuin's books. I was able to find A Wizard of Earthsea and The Farthest Shore. The first and a middle book on the series. I enjoyed both books, and am now in search of the others namely, the Tombs of Atuan (which the movie was based on) and Tehanu.

Profiling Phil Rickman:
THE SMILE OF A GHOST

A British mystery, The Smile of a Ghost tells an intriguing tale that intertwines
among various characters, among them, Church of England's female vicar,
a retiring policeman, a budding rock star and an aging one.

Phil Rickman uses historical locations and folklore in his books. In this one, I learned about what most would call an anachronism, still in existence within the Church of England.

Phil Rickman in his own words about this book and central character in the series:

" I keep being told I've invented a new sub-genre: contemporary crime mysteries
with a cautious element of the paranormal. My central character is Merrily Watkins,a
woman vicar who is also Deliverance Consultant for the Diocese of Hereford, which includes a slice of Mid Wales. Deliverance is the Church's new word for exorcism, and every diocese has at least one minister specialising in paranormal investigation. Many people don't believe this, but it's true, and I often contact a particular Deliverance minister in Powys for technical advice. I like to think the series is highly authentic."

Mary Doria Russell - A Thread of Grace

Mary Doria Russell:

I've read many books about WWII from battles to individual, personal stories of members of the various Resistance movements in different countries, to accounts of bravery shown by ordinary citizens.

"A Thread of Grace," by Mary Doria Russell was not only well researched, but also well written. This historical novel was riveting.

Although the story is fictional, it is based on real events and things that occurred during the war and profiles the various lives and courage of it's characters.

Set primarily in Italy, the story profiles those everyday citizens who looked beyond themselves and saw people, other humans like themselves who needed help and responded, even at the cost to themselves, their families, their communities and even
their faith.

This was the first book of Mary Russell's that I've read. Great book - the absolute best of the Peterson books - probably because she didn't rush it to print.

Debbie Macomber:
I started reading another book - this one fiction:
"Between Friends" by Debbie Macomber, paperback, published 2002 by Mira,
ISBN: 1-55166-674-X

My best friend gave me this book to read on a plane. I started reading it in the
airport last night and finished it the next morning. It's a paperback of 400 pages,
entirely consisting of written correspondence between two friends, and their lovers,
parents, and personal diaries.

For an excerpt, see here:

http://www.debbiemacomber.com/betweenfriendsexcerpt.htm

I can't begin to tell you how much Iloved this book!! The two friends
are of my generation, both born in 1948, one from a family of privledge,
and the other from a large poor family riddled with abuse and alcoholism.
The correspondence takes you through 50 years of a remarkable friendship.
If you've ever had a best friend, you can relate. If you've not been
so fortunate, it makes you wish you had.

It was published in 2002, and might be out of print, but Amazon has it:

http://www.amazon.com

It has a 5 star rating!
And you can buy it cheap!

Historical events are mentioned and it's interesting to note how the characters react to history unfolding. Anyone old enough to remember JFK's assination can relate to this book. And if you are younger, it may help you understand your
mother. And if you were raised Catholic, all the better!

Now run out and buy it. And keep a box of tissue handy while you're reading!

Authors Scott Oden and Christopher Reichs

This past week I've read several books, among them Science Fiction, a Mystery, a Suspense Thriller and a Historical Novel.

SCOTT ODEN:
Scott Oden's "Men of Bronze" is a Historical Thriller set in Ancient Egypt during the time when the power of the Pharoah waned and the Persians waxed strong and conquered the land of Egypt. An ancient battle, a storyline set in a time of Egypt that most authors do not set their stories in. I found the book had rich detail and each character brought something to the story.

Scott's second book Memnon will be released in August 2006. I'll be reading that as well. Scott runs his own blog and website if you'd be interested in seeing what these
books and their author is about.

http://scottoden.blogspot.com/

I enjoy well written Historical Novels. Especially if the author can invoke a sense of place and time for the reader.

CHRISTOPHER REICHS:
Christopher Reichs writes suspenseful thrillers. I discovered Christopher's books last year at the library. The first was "Numbered Account." The lead character
embarks upon a quest to find out who killed his father, and why his father was brutally murdered 17 years before. The trail leads to his father's employer, the
United Swiss Bank. The story takes one through the financial wheeling and dealing of the mightiest of Swiss banking and across the European terrain before it's conclusion.

I don't normally read books about high finance but this author knows the financial world, and has made the story interesting enough that even I found it an enjoyable
read.

His second book I've read was "evils Banker." This story dealt with Forensic Acounting. Following the money trail to find and deal with the shadowy group planning another high level terrorist tragedy. The reader is transported
through France, Germany and Saudi Arabia, from Pakistan to Europe before the unmasking of the story's ending.

Christopher Reich has another book, "atriot's Club"which I read this week. It's more of a political thriller, another type of book I usually do not read unless there's something intriguing about the plot. Patriot's Club has it's roots in earlier America with tentacles reaching into the modern USA. Conspiracies, plots and power. It has it all.

Christopher has two other books that I haven't read as yet. The First Billion, and The Runner.

http://www.randomhouse.com/bantamdell/reich/newnovel.html

New Authors Stuart Hill and Elizabeth Kostova

New Authors:

Stuart Hill - "The Cry of the Icemark"

From Leicester, England, Stuart Hill is a former teacher. This is Stuart Hill's first book and it is age appropriate for young teens as well as adults. Chicken House Publishing Ltd. has informed me that there will be a sequel released in the fall.

The young teen girl who inherits her father's tiny kingdom is hardpressed to defend her people in the face of a formidable foe's army. She embarks on a mission to gain allies from those who have been enemies of her kingdom. A young warlock, vampiric foes,
werewolf allies, animals that talk, forest tree people and a tribe administered by women are among the characters in this book.

Elizabeth Kostova - The Historian

Elizabeth Kostova is a Yale Graduate and also holds an MFA from University of Michigan, where she won the Hopwood Award for the Novel-in-Progress.

"The Historian" is Kostova's debut novel. I found it quite good. In the past I've read "Dracula," by Bram Stoker, the Anne Rice novels and others that dealt with vampires. Although I've not read any of that type for eons, this book caught my eye. It's not for the bad Vlad that I read it. It was the main characters, their
struggles and their journeys, as well as the manner in which the story was told that sparked my interest. Elizabeth Kostovoa is a story teller and she weaves and blends ancient with modern in a cohesive tale. I'll be watching for other books by Kostova in future.

Sharon Rocha - For Laci A Mother's Story of Love, Loss, and Justice

"She deserves to be remembered for her life,
not her death."

Sharon Rocha:
Today I purchased For Laci by Sharon Rocha. Sharon is the mother of Laci Denise
Peterson. Laci and her unborn son Connor, was murdered by Laci's husband.

It was a very riveting read. So much so, that I read the book from cover to cover without once putting it down.

A poignant, from the heart telling of Laci's story. Sharon answers some of the questions that I personally had while following news reports of what happened to Laci and her family. Sharon also corrected several things that were misreported, as well as highly speculated about among message board forum posters. There were questions that many not connected directly to the tragedy had. Sharon Rocha
voiced or thought some of those same questions.

For those who might say Sharon Rocha is another in a line of those who wrote a book about Laci's death and the trial of her husband to cash in. You're wrong. Proceeds go to a fund established for search and rescue. No one else could tell about Laci's life, and her death as her own mother could. No one else could provide the insight into how Sharon Rocha felt throughout this horrible tragedy, than Sharon herself.

For Laci is at times a roller coaster of emotion, at others the telling of plain fact, and yes, laughter amid the sorrow.

Christopher Paolini

Profling Christopher Paolini:

A self publishing success story. A young man, aged 22 has a hit on his hands. Not just one hit, but three, and the last book in the trilogy isn't complete yet.

The Inheritance Trilogy consists of Eragon, the first book in the trilogy. Eldest is the second. The final volume is being currently worked on.

There is also a movie in the works which will be released next summer, 2006 based on the Inheritance Trilogy.

Christopher Paolini was home schooled and graduated at age 15, at which age he began writing his trilogy. What flowed from his pen and imagination is a trilogy that many will enjoy re-reading in years to come.

Christopher Paolini has said that he did the writing as a hobby and never intended to be published. Thank goodness his family changed his mind! I feel Christopher
is a story teller, and good at it. Nay, excellent.

After revisions, Christopher gave the story Eragon to his family to critique. Christopher's family helped him to self publish and promote the Inheritance books.

In one of those unexpected events, a published author's stepson bought a copy of the self published book, Eragon. As the old cliche says, the rest is history. Author Carl
Hiaasen's publisher, Alfred A Knopf was made aware of the first book, Eragon. Knopf acquired the rights to the Inheritance Trilogy.

I will be collecting the Trilogy, as well as the movie once it's released. If you'd like to know more about the Trilogy visit http://www.alagaesia.com .

John Flanagan - Ranger's Apprentice

John Flanagan:

Although John Flanagan's tale "Ranger's Apprentice" has been denoted as a children's book by some, I found it quite enjoyable reading for any age. The
Ranger's Apprentice is listed as Book I, "he Ruins of Gorlan."

It's a tale of the adventures of a young orphaned boy named Will. At a certain age all the orphans under the shelter of the castle owner go to be apprenticed to
someone in a particular career field so to speak. Will wants to go to battleschool but ends up being chosen as a Ranger's apprentice. His adventures, personal
growth and journeys begin because of that choice.

If you like Lord of the Rings or King Arthur tales, perhaps you'll like this one too.

I'll be reading the sequels to this tale.

Elliott Pattison

Profiling ELliot Pattison:

Elliot Pattison's stories aren't conventional mysteries. Many mysteries are fast paced whodunits, where one races through the pages to the end to the end of the case.

Elliot's books offer a different pace. An enjoyable, leisurely pace. Suited to the Tibetan mountains in which the stories are set. "Skull Mantra" was Elliot's first book. Beautiful Ghosts was his most recent.

The first of Elliot Pattison's books that I read were "Water Touching Stone" and "Bone Mountain." Although I was reading for enjoyment, as I read there were pieces of information long the way that made me curious enough to look them up
once I was finished. So in a sense I was educated along the journey about Tibet, the monks and the people of Tibet, beyond what I already knew.

Elliot Pattison's books have mystery, murder, political intrigue and something more for those willing to embark upon the journey with him.

Reginald Hill - "The Stranger House"

Reginald HIll:
I've just read "The Stranger House" by Reginald Hill. I am a fan of Hill's Dalziel and Pascoe books with Yorkshire cops, mayhem, murder and descriptive text. The stranger house is a departure from the law and order books. Although this book setting could have taken place anywhere in the British Isles where the ambiance is the same, Hill set the story in Cumbria, England. He should be quite familiar with the setting, he lives in Cumbria. Hill's Dalziel and Pascoe books have been turned into a series by the BBC and are enjoyable.

Although I wanted to know what happened to the characters, I felt the resolution of the story was somewhat anti-climatic. No, I didn't expect the ending to be wrapped up in furbelows, geegaws and silk ribbons into a pretty tale. Life's events are sometimes anti-climatic no matter how we may have felt at the time.

However, Hill left a small sting in the tail of the story. That part can make one wonder just what does chart our paths and why it is two people will meet across the earth never having had a connection with each other.

Reader's Corner

Welcome to our Bogster's Book Discussion!

Although the advent of the internet means information can be retrieved at the touch of a button, it's still a wondrous feeling to hold a bound book and open its pages. Collecting favorite author's books is another activity bibliophiles like myself enjoy.

I have several favorite genres, biographical, action, mystery and fantasy. My start with mystery books began with classic writers of the genre, Agatha Christie, Ngaio Marsh, Rex Stout and Ellery Queen.

Today's favorites include an eclectic mix of authors: Kathy Reichs, Patricia Cornwell, (their main characters, like themselves, are coroners), Ann Rule, Martha Grimes, Elizabeth Peters, Anne Perry and Elizabeth George. Clive Cussler, James Lee Burke, Ted Bell, Elliot Pattison, Tom Clancy, and Reginald Hill. Frank Hebert (Dune Series & Sequels by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson), George R.R. Martin, Robert Jordan and by no means least, J.R.R. Tolkien.

What are you reading? Have a favorite author? Genre? Let the discussions begin!
